Dec 6 Contest Information

I just received information on the contest location for Sunday Dec 6. Here is the information that Kim Clary provided the coaches.

Thanks,

Conor

For this weekend’s contest in HMB (Half Moon Bay), we may possibly have a venue change, but still stay in HMB. The wonderful HMB coaches will be helping us decide on the best venue for the forecasted conditions. We will email out the final venue mid day this Friday.

Here are directions to the 2 potential venues (thank you to HMB High coach Marty Phelps):

Francis Kelly State Beach:

From Swift Street in Santa Cruz to Francis Kelly State Beach (AKA Kelly Street)

North Hwy #1 46.7 Miles

Left Kelly Ave.

Continue to the end of the street and turn right at park entrance.

Entrance Fee is required! State Park Passes are accepted.

The Jetty:

From Swift Street in Santa Cruz to the Dirt Parking lot at the Jetty

North Hwy #1 approx. 50 miles

Right on Coronado

Immediate Left on Obispo

Continue 3/10ths of a mile.

Parking lot is on the west side of the road in front of the Fire Station.

Parking is Free!

We have ONE snack bar volunteer for Sunday’s Jr. High contest from 7am-11am. We REALLY need more parent or student volunteers. If you can help out, please respond to this email. Shifts are Sat. and Sun. from 7-11:30 or 11:30-4. Thank you so much!

The CSSL Snack Bar WILL NOT be selling pizza because Half Moon Bay Jr. and Sr. High schools will be hosting a stellar BBQ on both Sat. and Sun. Bring some $ for some pulled pork and tri tip sandwiches and much more!

If you would like to make a mini vacation out of the Half Moon Bay contest, Comfort Inn has offered a 10% discount for anyone associated with The CSSL! Just mention it when you make your reservation. Thanks you Half Moon Bay Jr. High coach Rocky Raynor for setting up this discount!

Comfort Inn

2930 N Cabrillo Hwy. , Half Moon Bay, CA, US, 94019

Phone: (650) 712-1999

Last, but definitely not least please have your rosters to me by 7pm this Wednesday.

Thanks so much for all of your dedication to The Core Scholastic Surf League and the youth that it serves!

Half Moon Bay contest Dec 6

Hello Aptos Surfers,

The next contest is set for December 6 at Half Moon Bay. Me and Big John Shepard are going to camp at Half Moon Bay the night before the contest. I reserved one spot (#10) for December 5 and it seems like the spaces are going fast. If you are considering camping, then make your reservations soon. The camp ground is Half Moon Bay State Beach , Francis Beach Campground (call 800-444-7275 for reservations or book on line www.reserveamerica.com). The cost is $35.00 per night.

See you at school,

Conor

Surf Contest Information

Hello Aptos Surfers,

As of 1230 on Friday, the surf contest is set for Waddell Creek. The location is on the border of Santa Cruz County and San Mateo County. Take Highway 1 north, through Santa Cruz City (Mission Street) and follow the coast.

For those of you that signed up to surf in the contest, I do not expect any of you to surf if you feel uncomfortable with the location. If for any reason, you decide not to surf once you get to the venue, please tell me. Your safety is my number one concern. I have formally requested the contest to be changed to Capitola because I feel it is better suited for the middle schools. Joe Clarke the coach from New Brighton Middle School has also request the venue change for the same reason. If we do have a change of venue, I will send out another e-mail and text with the updated information.

Waddell Creek is a remote location, so please bring food or money for the snack bar. Also, wear warm clothing. Attached to the e-mail is the Core notification of the venue. Please read it for additional information.

If anyone has questions about the location or anything else, feel free to call me at home, (662-8822) or my cell, (212-1791).

Thanks,

Conor

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conditions at Waddell this morning were 4', offshore and a bit mushy. NOT big and scary :) Sat. and Sun. should be about the same size. Also, there will be 2 lifeguards on duty with a PWC.
Both Jr. High on Saturday and High School on Sunday will be at Waddell. First heat at 7am sharp.
Please remember to bring $ for snacks at The CSSL Snack Bar (many drinks and goodies and Pizza My Heart will be bringing some slices) and for parking. There is a self pay parking kiosk at Waddell that the lifeguards asked us to honor.
The CSSL still needs help with the snack bar. It is raising $ for EVERYONE'S end of celebration and awards ceremony. A few hours from 15-20 people will get us through the season. Feel free to volunteer an hour or two in between watching the heats of your son, daughter, brother, sister, or friend.
See you all this weekend!
Please call me if you have any questions or concerns.

Surf Practice Friday, November 20

Surf practice will held in Capitola on Friday Nov 20 at 4:00. I will not be there because of a family obligation, but Big John Shepard will be taking my place. John will have access to the van, so if anyone needs a ride, please contact me by cell (212-1791). Also for those surfing in the contest on Saturday, please review the heat sheet I sent to your e-mail addresses so you know when you are surfing. John will go over some contest rules during Friday’s practice.

Sorry

I want to apologize to everyone who showed up to practice just to be told that practice was cancelled. In the future, I will be sure to drive out to the surf spot prior to the end of school to check the conditions. If the waves drop (or the tide drops like yesterday) I will try to send out a mass text advising you all of the last minute change. So if possible, can you all e-mail me with your cell numbers or you can send a text to my phone (212-1791).

Sorry again,

Conor

Surf Practice Friday, November 13

I have gotten more than a few requests for practice to be held somewhere other than Capitola. Since a few of you want a change, I will be happy to change this practice session to 38th Avenue. Now, just for the record, Capitola is a great place for the beginners and it is easy for everyone to get out, park their cars on so on, but I will give 38th a try to see if you all like it.

Meet on the cliffs on the Capitola side of Jack O'neills house. DO NOT GO DOWN THE STAIRS! I will take all of you down an easy path. The stairs are not in great shape due to the construction. PRACTICE IS AT 4:00 and will go until about 5:00 because it is getting dark earlier and earlier.

As always, check the outside of Courtney Welles' room for any last minute changes.

See you tomorrow,

Conor

Surf Practice Friday, November 6

Surf Practice will he held in Capitola at 4:00 on Friday. For those of you that don't know, our demo hats (beanie and ball caps) are in. I will bring them to practice on Friday so you can take a look. I don't know what to expect for waves, but I am told that the swell will be picking up. Surfline has the swell getting overhead on Saturday, so maybe we will get some good surf.

Also, I have the van at the school, so if anyone needs a ride, I will be able to drive you from the school.

See you on Friday,

Conor
